Position Summary:
The Logistics Manager is responsible for leading Bailey Nurseries' inbound, internal, and outbound product movement, including transportation, packaging, carrier relationships, and logistics processes across multiple locations. This role ensures products move efficiently, accurately, safely, and cost-effectively through the supply chain while supporting customer satisfaction and operational success.
As Bailey continues to grow, the Logistics Manager will play a key role in strengthening logistics systems, building consistent processes, improving freight performance, and identifying innovative solutions that support speed to market, cost control, and reliable service in a complex, perishable inventory environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead logistics operations to ensure timely, accurate product movement and high service levels for customers and internal partners.Evaluate and recommend equipment, packaging, and handling solutions that improve operational efficiency, product quality, customer satisfaction, and cost effectiveness.Monitor logistics market trends, competitor freight strategies, and industry innovations to proactively recommend improvements. Lead transportation and delivery benchmarking efforts to support competitive cost, service, and speed performance.Oversee inbound product movement, internal transfers, and outbound customer shipments across multiple company locations.Partner cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, Production, and other departments to ensure consistent processes, reliable service, and strong communication across locations. Manage strategic relationships with carriers, vendors, logistics partners, and third-party logistics providers to support service, compliance, and cost objectives.Develop, standardize, and maintain logistics procedures, workflows, and SOPs to support consistency, scalability, and operational excellence.Ensure logistics activities are performed in alignment with safety, compliance, plant regulatory, quality, and company standards. Establish, monitor, and use logistics KPIs, including on-time-in-full performance, transportation cost per unit or shipment, order cycle time, delivery accuracy, and service levels, to drive performance improvement. Hire, lead, coach, and develop logistics staff to support current operations, future growth, and strong team performance. Build a culture of accountability, safety, collaboration, continuous improvement, and alignment with Bailey Core Values. Develop and implement innovative logistics strategies that improve speed to market, reduce total landed costs, and strengthen Bailey's ability to serve customers effectively.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in logistics, transportation, warehouse operations, supply chain, or related operations management. Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered. Strong understanding of logistics, transportation, supply chain operations, and customer service in a competitive, multi-location environment. Experience with TMS, ERP systems, logistics technology, and data-driven decision-making. Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, negotiation, and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Ability to anticipate shifts in demand related to agricultural, production, and shipping cycles and adjust logistics strategies as needed. Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate transportation scenarios, service levels, cost impact, and operational performance. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience managing carrier contracts, freight benchmarking, and logistics vendor relationships. Familiarity with financial, budgeting, and cost-control processes. Knowledge of applicable transportation, safety, compliance, plant regulatory, or ISO-related requirements. Experience in agriculture, horticulture, nursery, distribution, or other perishable product environments.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
This role is primarily office-based at the Newport, Minnesota location, with travel to other company locations, customer sites, vendor locations, carrier facilities, and industry events as needed.
The position may require time in warehouse, nursery, greenhouse, shipping, loading, outdoor, and production areas. The employee may be exposed to normal outdoor weather and greenhouse conditions. The employee must be able to sit, stand, walk, communicate, use a computer, and move throughout office and operational areas as needed.
